La Laguna, Tenerife - Places of interest Although La Laguna is no longer the capital of Tenerife it still posses many of the characteristics of a capital city, it is still thought of as the cultural and religious capital. La Laguna is rife with culture and history, it boasts amazing architectural monuments and many building from the 17 th and the 18 th century.

Churches:

La Laguna hosts many significant buildings many of which are churches. However one of the most well known churches is that of the Iglesia de la Concepcion. This church was the first church in Tenerife and it was constructed in the year 1502. other well known churches are those of Iglesia de San Miguel de las Victorias and Iglesia de Santo Domingo. The Iglesia de San Miguel de las Victorias was built in 1507 and has many gothic wooden sculptures inside, the Iglesia de Santa Domingo was built in the 17 th century and inside it has some exquisite paintings by Cristobala Hernandeza de Quintana.

Casa del Corregidor:

This building is one of the oldest in the city. When La Laguna was serving as the capital of Tenerife this building was used as the town hall. Casa de la Alhndiea:
This building was an economic planning centre and it also served to house the administrative officials of the town. If was built in the early 17 th century.

Monasterio de San Juan Bautista

This monastery was founded bythe Franciscan order of the Clarisas in 1577. this monastery had to be rebuilt in the 18 th century as it burnt down in a fire.

Iglesia de San Sebastian

This church was originally built in the 16 th century however it was then reconstructed in the 19 th century. Throughout the years this church has changed to and from religions.

Palacio de Lercaro

Palacio de Lercaro
served as Gaspar Justiniani s house, his child, Catherine Justiniani then went on to live in the house in 1593. She lived there with the general lieutenant of Tenerife Francisco Lercaro, who too was Italian. The house that you can see today was built at the end of the 16 th century and today it is usedas a museum of history for Tenerife.

Casa Salazar

This building is a combination of Baroque architecture and the Neoclassical. Building on this house commenced in the mid 17 th century.

Palacio de Nava

This building is a very unusual structure, possibly one of the most interesting in Tenerife. It has been built with a mixture of Baroque, neoclassical and Maniersta architectural influences.


Casa de Alvarado - Bracamonte o de los Capitanes Generales


Diego Alvarado-Bracamonte was Tenerife s chief commander from 1624 until 1631and he constructed this building.

Antiguo Colegio de las Dominicas

This building today is used as the city council office however in the past it was used to school the Dominican mothers. This building was built with gothic architecture.

Casa de Anchieta

In the 16 th Century this house belonged to the Captain of the notary public of Tenerife, Jaun de Anchieta. It is also said to be the home of Father Jose de Anchieta, who was the Apostle and founder of Sao Paulo, Brazil. In later years the Famous poet Manuel lived there.

Ermita de San Miguel

This structure was built in 1506 by Fernandez de Lugo and was dedicated to St Micheal.


Monasterio de Santa Catalina de Siena


This church was built in the 17th Century as a home for the Dominican nuns.
